Finish with a matt or satin top coat and before you do that get a collection of spray cans , moss green, black, other earth colours and just very lightly (so you only get a few splatters) spray some of the lumps and bumps to give high/low lighting effects.

With this I used craft glue and sand rather than grout then spray painted as a bove.

Cheers Rick when you say matt/satin top coat do you mean the sealant? In hindsite I should of used a lighter paint for the finish as I think the burnt umber doesn't look as good as a sandier and lighter colour would. The spray-paint effects you have added look awesome, are these done with any spray paint or is there a particular paint to use that isn't toxic/ is pet safer.

Just a cheap non-toxic quick dry spray paint, and yes it's the sealant that needs to be matt finish, either that or break the gloss with a quick rub over with sandpaper.

I will have a play around with the spray paint idea, as for the sealant I did 3 coats using mod podge matte sealant although it doesn't show up that well in the pictures. As I say there are a few things I would change such as overall colour of the scape and adding a bit of sand into the last layer of sealant and/or grout to create a rougher finish.

...... maybe if I could persuade my Mum to let me have another viv
