Elly needs to diet

That heavy dewlap under her chin is a sign of excess fat, so I'd be cutting her food back and trying to stabilise her at that weight or a little less.

Hi Rick,

How on earth do I put a bearded dragon on a diet lol!

The way she eats you would think that I starve her anyway. So is it the live food I should cut down on and do I give her more veg instead? Any advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Cut right down on the live food. You can go to only feeding her livefood 2 to 3 times a week. Give her veg everyday. Shrek's been on a diet for over a year now but it hasn't made any difference - some are just big 'boned' like us I reckon!

She's a beauty! May be a daft question - but are you sure she is only 5 months old??!

Given the weight and size I'd have said an adult, 18months +.

Hi

This is a picture of Elly the day we brought her home - 13th March 2010 (now her official birthday) - she was just over six weeks at that point so that makes her just under 6 months now. She has just grown like a weed!! :)

If he is truely 6 months...I'm no expert, but she is grossly overweight.

Hi I've just read an interesting article in the latest issue of practicle reptile keeping about a BD that had a lot of fluid in it's dulap (under it's chin) and the picture loked just like the one of Elly so it might be worth a vet trip just to make sure there isn't a medical reason for it.

Hi,

Thats interesting, we actually have an appointment with the vet tommorrow so I will certainly ask him. We have found a couple of Mites on Elly today so I was straight on the phone to the vet and whilst getting treatment for the mites its also a good time for her to have a complete overhaul and there are lots of questions that I want to ask not least about her weight.
